My name is Nick Coray. I’m an industrial designer currently studying Design For Industry (DFI) at Northumbria University.

I have always had a passion for design, with design being the biggest influence in my life. This has led to a keen interest in new ideas in areas such as Renewable energy, mobility and materials, Space travel and rapidly evolving technologies. I’m always looking for the next big step in the designing process, such as using new technologies or processes,  and I’m always striving to develop my skills and improve my abilities.

I spend a lot of time designing varied products and ideas. From a young age, I have been involved in design by creating my own projects and exploring different designs including furniture, speakers and much more.

My Passions & Interests

I have a passion for computers, including Vintage Apple as I love the designs of their older products (e.g. G4 iMac, iPod classic). I also have a keen interest in Audio HiFi with a collection of vintage Bang & Olufsen, Harman Kardon, Bowers Wilkins speakers

I have a strong passion for Sci-fi (mostly Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who and Batman), which gives me new inspiration and ideas. I have an interest and respect for Elon Musk and his companies Tesla, Space X, and Neural Link as I too believe in their mission to make the earth a better place.

Basically, I’m an all-around geek!

I have a passion for electronics. I can do lots of things with computers from building, upgrading, repairs and basic coding. I also consider myself an audiophile with a passion for Hi-Fi equipment and have built, restored and repaired several speakers and sound systems and have designed some which I have built. I also do a lot of 3D printing and making Scifi Miniatures and props from things such as an RGB lightsaber with sound effects and a miniature Bat-Signal.

Bee Keeping:

One of my hobbies is bee-keeping. I have been a beekeeper for over 10 years, I do this with my father and we have a small apiary with a few hives. We harvest the wax which my father uses to make furniture polish, and we are looking to sell the honey in local farm shops. This has given me an appreciation for designs from nature (i.e.... the Honeycomb).

Another of my small but enjoyable hobbies is Photography. I have won some junior photography awards. I enjoy photographing almost everything and I am now getting into aerial photography using a drone.

Family Design Connection

My family (on my father's side of the family) has had a connection to design for generations, from the 1800's when one of my ancestors founded Wake & Dean (later known as Avalon Furniture), A British furniture designer & manufacturer. I researched Wake & Dean as part of my Dissertation at university which can be found here.

My grandfather (on my father's side) had one of the first digital printing businesses in the UK using one of the first Macintoshes in the UK.

My Father trained under one of the UK's top furniture designers (John Makepeace) and tort design at his local school. He is now one of the top antique furniture restorers in the UK working for collectors like the National Trust.
